GTA 6 Called Most Advanced Game Ever — But 30FPS Explained

Digital Foundry Weighs In After Gameplay Reveal

Following GTA 6's first major gameplay showcase, technical analysts at Digital Foundry have offered one of the most glowing technical assessments any game has ever received. Oliver Mackenzie went so far as to describe it as the most impressive example of real-time game rendering he has personally witnessed — a significant claim from someone who scrutinises games at this level for a living.

What Makes It Look So Good

The Digital Foundry breakdown highlighted several areas where Rockstar appears to have pushed well beyond current-generation norms:

  • Character rendering — hair physics and skin detail are exceptional not just on the main protagonist, but across a wide range of NPCs, which is far harder to achieve at scale
  • Ray tracing implementation — rather than applying it everywhere as a blanket feature, Rockstar has reportedly been selective, using it in the spots where it delivers the greatest visual payoff
  • Conventional rendering techniques — the studio is blending modern and traditional methods to strike a balance between image fidelity and keeping the game running at all

Why 30FPS at Launch

The 30 frames-per-second target has been a talking point since early previews, and the gameplay footage goes a long way toward explaining the trade-off. The sheer density of detail Rockstar is rendering — from dynamic lighting to crowd simulation — places an enormous load on current console hardware. This mirrors Rockstar's long-standing approach of prioritising visual quality over raw frame rate, a pattern that goes back to GTA 5's original console releases.

It is worth noting that Rockstar has not confirmed final performance modes for all platforms, so a 60FPS option further down the line remains a possibility, though nothing has been announced.

With a release date of November 19, 2026, there is still time for further optimisation, but based on what experts are seeing, the 30FPS decision looks like an intentional quality-first choice rather than a technical shortcoming.
