GTA 6 Map Is 3× Bigger Than RDR2's
Rockstar confirms the GTA 6 map is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's, with Vice City and surrounding areas to explore.
A Massive Leap in Scale
Rockstar has officially confirmed that the GTA 6 map will be three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable world — itself one of the largest and most detailed open worlds ever built. That's a staggering benchmark, and it gives us a clearer picture of just how ambitious the studio's vision is for its return to Vice City ahead of the November 19, 2026 release.
The game is set in a fictional version of Miami and its wider surroundings, meaning players can expect dense urban streets alongside swamps, coastlines, and rural outskirts — all stitched together into one continuous open world.
Detail, Not Just Size
Bigger doesn't always mean better, but Rockstar appears to be matching scale with an extraordinary level of craft. According to a New York Times report drawing on developer interviews, GTA 6 contains well over 600,000 animations. For context:
- GTA 5 launched with roughly 55,000 animations
- Red Dead Redemption 2 pushed that to around 300,000
- GTA 6 more than doubles RDR2's total
Rockstar North director Aaron Garbut described an approach where virtually every interior space has been individually considered — right down to the photographs on a wall reflecting the actual people who live there, complete with accurate tattoos and personal details.
"Every room in the game, somebody thought about this," Garbut said, highlighting a level of environmental storytelling that goes far beyond what most studios attempt.
What This Means for Players
A map this size, packed with hand-crafted detail, suggests GTA 6 will reward exploration in ways previous entries simply couldn't. Whether you're chasing story missions or just cruising the coastline, there should be something genuinely new around almost every corner. We'll be keeping the map section updated as more confirmed locations surface.
