GTA 6: What Rockstar Should Borrow From GTA 4
GTA 4 still holds up in surprising ways — here's what its design philosophy could mean for GTA 6 in 2026.
A Classic Worth Revisiting
With GTA 6 arriving on November 19, 2026, the anticipation has many players going back to older entries in the series. GTA 4 — released way back in 2008 — remains one of the most tonally distinct games Rockstar has ever made, and revisiting it now makes it clear just how many of its ideas still feel fresh.
The question worth asking: could some of GTA 4's strengths quietly find their way into GTA 6?
What Made GTA 4 Stand Out
For all its age, GTA 4 did several things that later entries arguably dialled back:
- Grounded storytelling — Niko Bellic's arc was personal and morally complex, far more restrained than the bombastic excess of GTA 5.
- Realistic physics and weight — Vehicles felt heavy and unpredictable in a way that made driving genuinely tense.
- Consequence and tone — Liberty City felt lived-in and gritty, with a narrative that took its characters seriously.
- Relationship systems — Keeping up with friends and contacts had a real effect on gameplay, adding a social layer that felt ahead of its time.
What This Could Mean for GTA 6
Rockstar has confirmed very little about GTA 6's specific mechanics, so any connection to GTA 4's design is speculative for now. That said, the studio has always evolved rather than repeated itself, and the appetite among long-time fans for a more grounded, story-driven experience is clearly strong.
GTA 6 is set in a fictional version of Miami and surroundings, and its dual-protagonist setup already suggests a more character-focused approach than GTA 5's sprawling ensemble.
Whether Rockstar leans into GTA 4's heavier tone or charts its own course entirely, the bar set by that 2008 classic is still worth measuring against.
